AMUGIS

Koordersiodendron pinnatum, also known as Amugis, is a Philippine native tree.
A large tree that can reach as much as 50 meters in height. The bark of the tree is distinct for its black or dark brown coloration and its deep fissures, it also exudes a clear exudate when damaged. The leaves are pinnate with an odd number of leaflets, a hairy rachis, and lacks stipules while the leaflets are subopposite, ovate-oblong or oblong in their appearance, a leaf base which is also slightly asymmetric, acuminate, glabrescent, and with a short petiolule. Flowers are borne upon panicles which are axillary, bisexual, radially symmetric, 5-merous, and are white that may also be tinted green or yellow. The sepals are fused at the base while the petals are free but imbricate, each flower has 10 stamens with round anthers and a sessile, superior spherically shaped ovary. The fruit is a 3-celled drupe that is broadly ellipsoid in its shape with obtuse ends, once ripe it becomes yellowish in its appearance. The sweet and edible fruit is also a favorite of the palm civet. It is used in local medicine and studies show that it has suggested anticancer, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. The wood is moderately durable, heavy, and has a dark red color. This uniform color makes it excellent for furniture and house construction. The seeds are recalcitrant, which means it needs to be sown immediately. The fallen mature fruit can be planted straight into potting media.
