Ateneo Center for Asian Studies (ACAS)

The Ateneo Center for Asian Studies, established in April 2001, is a research center that aims to promote Asian Studies through disciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and multi-disciplinary research and other related activities such as seminars, workshops, and lectures. Since 2013, it has offered thesis/dissertation grants to the faculty of the Ateneo de Manila whose research topic is on Asia. The Center engages in collection of materials on Asian Studies; hosting of research fellows; dissemination and promotion of research through publications. Primarily with the help of its international advisory board that consists of prominent scholars from Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Australia, it links with institutions both in the Philippines and abroad. It regularly offers language courses, specifically, Korean, Indonesian, Thai, and Russian to young professionals who need the language skills for research or work.

Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development (ACERD)

The Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development (ACERD) was founded in 1989 as the research unit of the Department of Economics in economics and economic policy. ACERD directs and manages the research activities of the Department of Economics that focus on applied economics and public policy in order to enhance teaching and contribute to policy debates and formulation in the Philippines, both of which are necessary for nation building.

Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT)

The Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT) is a center for education and development in English language and literature teaching (ELLT). It follows the Jesuits’ prime education objective - "to form men-and-women-for-others who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ" (Arrupe, Pedro, SJ, July 1973: 26). ACELT seeks to contribute to this task through the formation of professionally competent, socially concerned teachers, teacher trainers, and ELLT managers - multipliers for the process of institutional and social change.

Ateneo Center for Organization Research and Development (Ateneo CORD)

Ateneo CORD takes pride in being a part of the Department of Psychology which is a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Center of Excellence. Consistent with the Department’s drive to excel, Ateneo CORD uses the latest research on human and organizational behavior to optimize both the individual skills of the employees and the structures and cultures they work in.

Ateneo Center for Social Entrepreneurship (ACSent)

The Ateneo Center for Social Entrepreneurship (ACSEnt) is the Ateneo de Manila University’s center committed to foster social transformation and contribute to nation-building by cultivating a vibrant social entrepreneurship sector in the Philippines. As part of the ongoing initiative to contribute to inclusive growth and development, ACSEnt’s fundamental priority is focused on developing an ecosystem comprised of multi-sector partners to support and enhance the creation of programs in research, education and training, advocacy and incubation. Such programs intend to further advance social entrepreneurship in the country and engage leaders, experts, practitioner and advocates who can extend collaborative partnerships with communities and other grassroots sectors, creating mutual socio-economic and environmental benefits that support national development.

Ateneo Initiative for Korean Studies (AIKS)

The Ateneo Initiative for Korean Studies (AIKS) was established in April 2012 to set up, grow and sustain Korean Studies in the Ateneo de Manila. Propelled by its economic success, the increasing importance of Korea in international affairs has resulted to unprecedented changes in geopolitics, creating new opportunities and challenges that affect Philippines-Korea relations. This has drawn the attention not only of policymakers but also of the academe towards the need for advancing analyses on issues related to Korea. In recognition of such need, AIKS was established to consolidate the University’s persisting efforts to stimulate interest in Korea and its culture among the members its community, and to contribute as well to the strengthening of Philippines-Korea partnership.

Ateneo Innovation Center (AIC)

The Ateneo Innovation Center is first and foremost a research organization within Ateneo but we have to go beyond just research and turn research into real products and services by commercialization through training, empowering and providing for the next generation of innovators and technopreneurs.

Ateneo Institute for Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP)

The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) offers yearly fellowships in creative writing for young writers across the nation. Its writing workshops cater to aspiring writers, presenting them with the fundamentals of writing as craft, art, and philosophical engagement so that they can enter the mainstream of Philippine Literature with a sense of responsibility that adds depth and direction to national cultural practices. More importantly, AILAP integrates the intellectual mainstreams of the Ateneo education to inspire individual writers in pursuing projects that are relevant to the history of ideas and the cultural traditions of the country.

Ateneo Java Wireless Competency Center (AJWCC)

The Ateneo Java Wireless Competency Center (AJWCC) is a research center under the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science. It was established in March 2003 at the Ateneo de Manila University in partnership with SMART Communications and Sun Microsystems with the aim of becoming a world-class research and development center. Its mission is to cultivate research and new product experimentation with the help of faculty, student and research groups to strengthen the synergy between the academe and IT industry.

Ateneo Language Learning Center (ALLC)

The Ateneo Language Learning Center (ALLC) provides training programs that address the language communication needs of those requiring competence in General English, in English for academic purposes and in English for the Corporate Setting. These programs are designed to develop and improve proficiency in English so that the language can be used confidently, effectively, and efficiently in a range of situations.

Ateneo Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies (ARLCCS)

Established in 2005 with an endowment from the Leong family, the Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies promotes Chinese Studies in the Ateneo de Manila University through workshops, scholarships, research, and other activities.Its objective is to help Filipinos understand and appreciate China in all her aspects, including culture, history, politics, business and economics, so as to be able to engage China in a constructive way. The Center subsidizes Chinese studies courses, provides incentives for promising students of Mandarin and Chinese studies, and awards scholarships to Filipinos who will do graduate work in Chinese studies so that they can teach and do research on China from the Philippines. The Center also organizes conferences and awards grants for research on China and the Chinese, and, the ethnic Chinese in the Philippines and elsewhere.

Ateneo Teacher Center (ATC)

The Ateneo Teacher Center (ATC) was established by the Education Department in 1985 in response to the country's need to provide for the retraining of teachers, especially in basic education. The Center is a support unit of the Education Department with the vision to serve the Philippine educational system by taking the lead in influencing educational policies and directions through graduate education, training programs and research. Its mission is to empower educators through an understanding of their profession and vocation. Specifically, it aims to upgrade the skills of teachers, guidance counselors and school administrators in basic education by conducting seminars and workshops.

Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University

The Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila is a non-profit institute which aims to promote Chinese language and culture and supporting local Chinese teaching in the Philippines

Eugenio Lopez, Jr. Center for Multimedia Communication

The Eugenio Lopez Jr. Center for Multimedia Communication at the Ateneo de Manila University seeks to develop competent, creative, ethical and globally competitive communication practitioners in an age of media convergence.

Fr. Jaime C. Bulatao Center for Psychology Services (Bulatao Center)

We are a center of the Department of Psychology of the Ateneo de Manila University. We offer clinical/community assessment and interventions, deliver training and education programs, and conduct research to address the psychosocial needs of individuals and communities. We provide comprehensive training for Counseling/Clinical, Developmental and Social psychology graduate students.

Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC)

The INSTITUTE OF PHILIPPINE CULTURE is a social science research organization of the School of Social Sciences of the Loyola Schools, Ateneo de Manila University. Founded in 1960, the IPC seeks a better understanding of culture and society in the Philippines and other Asian countries, an improved quality of life for disadvantaged groups, and a more peaceful, just, and equitable national and global society.

Ateneo Business Resource Center (BRC)

The Ateneo Business Resource Center (BRC) is a university-based learning resource that encourages and supports entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship.

Ateneo Family Business Development Center (AFBDC)

Ateneo Family Business Development Center envisions itself as the premiere learning resource for business families and family businesses in the ASEAN region. It addresses the need to reconcile business growth objectives with the overarching aspirations of the family network that must be satisfied.

Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University

Amid innovations spawned by digital technology, heightened restraints to press freedom, and the surge in news and issues with cross-border ramifications, the idea of reviving “pure” journalism education emerged in the agenda of the Ateneo de Manila University. Added impetus came from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which has an international reputation for development work in emerging democracies. Seeking to help raise the standards of Asian journalism, the foundation entrusted the Ateneo, a long-time partner in social development, with its regional journalism training program. In June 2000, the Konrad Adenauer Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University was inaugurated. It was envisioned as a hub of journalism education in the region, an oasis of learning for working journalists. In May 2006, “Asian” was added to the center’s name to accurately reflect the true geographical scope of its mandate. Today, the ACFJ promotes good journalism by providing training to and educational opportunities for working journalists in Asia.

National Chemistry Instrumentation Center (NCIC)

The National Chemistry Instrumentation Center (NCIC) is a research service center established in 1995 to provide support services in the areas of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometry and Mass Spectrometry (MS) to researchers, industry and government regulators in the Philippines. The initial impetus for the NCIC was the Engineering and Science Education Program (ESEP) financed through the World Bank and administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Center for Continuing Education (CCE)

The Ateneo Center for Continuing Education (CCE) supplements and complements the Ateneo Graduate School of Business' (AGSB) program offerings by addressing issue-specific industry concerns that require immediate, purposeful, and focused response. CCE is an industry resource and partner, doing advocacy on emerging critical issues and convening interested entities so that together, they can tackle a common concern.

CCE is imbued with a deep sense of mission to serve others in unique and remarkable ways. Conscious of its vital role in society, the Center continuously improves its products and services in a creative, innovative, and trend-setting way to address the changing needs of clients.

Governor Jose B Fernandez Jr Ethics Center

The Gov Jose B Fernandez Jr Ethics Center, in partnership with business and government, seeks to provide resources that will transform people, systems and structures of private and public organizations towards ethical behavior. It will also work with academic institutions so that together with them education can be used as a tool for effecting societal changes.

Le Cordon Bleu Ateneo de Manila

The Le Cordon Bleu Ateneo de Manila Institute delivers a broad range of Le Cordon Bleu educational programs in hospitality management in Areté, and soon, in Rockwell. LCBA provides its students a strong focus on integrating theory and hands-on experience with a strong management and service orientation as well as a global perspective in culinary, food, wine, nutrition, restaurant, and hotel and management education. With access to state-of-the-art instructional facilities designed to simulate the kitchens of restaurants and hotels, students receive personal instruction and mentorship from a faculty of Le Cordon Bleu Master Chefs and top-notch industry professionals who are committed to their success.

Ateneo-BAP Institute of Banking

(in cooperation with the Bankers Association of the Philippines)

The training arm of the Bankers Association of the Philippines and the Ateneo Graduate School of Business consortium was established in 1990, the Ateneo-BAP Institute of Banking offers developmental programs attuned to the current requirements and demands of the banking industry. The Institute's training mission places strong emphasis on up-to-date technology, high quality professionalism and ethical integrity.

Ateneo Center for Health Evidence, Action and Leadership (A-HEALS) 

The Ateneo Center for Health Evidence, Action and Leadership (A-HEALS) is a consortium of 8 Ateneo schools, which includes the four Ateneo Professional Schools (School of Medicine and Public Health, School of Government, Graduate School of Business, School of Law), and the four Ateneo Loyola Schools (School of Science and Engineering, School of Social Sciences, School of Humanities, John Gokongwei School of Management).
 
The Center’s vision is to contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty by engaging in effective public health interventions which provide financial protection to those who are ill, prevent illnesses and premature deaths which worsen levels and conditions of poverty; and enable health systems to be more responsive to people's health care needs. 
 
Achievement of these goals will be through active and empowered engagement of local government units (LGUs), utilizing an interdisciplinary approach in providing and implementing evidence-based recommendations.

The Fr. Bernas Center for Continuing Legal Education and Research (The Fr. Joaquin Bernas Center)

The Fr. Bernas Center for Continuing Legal Education & Research (The Fr. Bernas Center) is a special unit of the Ateneo Law School established to provide a venue for continuing legal education programs by holding legal education series, undertaking legal researches and producing legal publication on current, relevant and important legal topics and subjects.

Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee Center for the Rule of Law

The Teehankee Center for the Rule of Law aims to be the leader and central repository for Rule of Law studies in the Philippines and the ASEAN region and beyond. The Center also seeks to reclaim for the Philippines its rightful role in the area of academic scholarship The Chief Justice Claudio Teehankee Center Memorial Foundation was established by the late Chief Justice Marcelo Fernan and Justice Cecilia Munoz Palma in 1990 after the passing of their colleague in the court, Chief Justice Teehankee. Under the current chairmanship of Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide, Jr., the Teehankee Center for the Rule of Law (TCRL) at the Ateneo de Manila Law School was established in 2001 as the main flagship project of the Foundation with the help of the Lopez Foundation, the Consuelo Madrigal Foundation and the Petron Foundation together with the kind support and assistance of a host of members and friends of the Foundation.

Center for International Economic Law

In 2007, the Ateneo Center for International Economic Law (ACIEL) was formally established as a unit of the Law School with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development (ACERD). ACIEL was established to promote the thoughtful and scholarly attention to a broad range of subjects that concern the relation of the Law to cross-border economic activities, promote the study of International Economic Law (IEL) through research and publications, and become the vehicle by which the Law Faculty and the Faculty from the Department of Economics can cooperate and collaborate in the study, research, and promotion of the growth of IEL.

Ateneo Human Rights Center

The Ateneo Human Rights Center was founded in July 1986, a few months after the historic EDSA Revolution drew attention to the indomitable might that is People Power. While the dictatorship infamous for human rights violations was overthrown through peaceful and bloodless means, it became obvious immediately thereafter that much work still had to be done in the field of human rights. AHRC was established as one of the first university-based institutions engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

Housed in the School of Law of the Ateneo de Manila, AHRC strives to do its part in espousing the university’s challenge that every Atenean should use the gift of excellence to be “lux in Domino” – light in the Lord. It keeps faith with the guiding principle of forming men and women for others which underlies Ateneo pedagogy. As Fr. Bievenido F. Nebres, S.J., President of the University recently said: “The vigor of the Ateneo’s social centers and the many socially oriented activities on campus . . . reflect our commitment to place excellence at the service of others.”

Ateneo Legal Services Center 

The Law School operates the ALS Legal Services Center, headed by a Director and a Co-Director, who concurrently serve as professors-in-charge of the Clinical Legal Education and Development (CLED) classes. Under the supervision of volunteer lawyers, law students assist in the handling of cases of indigent clients, and actually enter their appearance before inferior courts. Students are provided with hands-on training through active participation in client interviews, consultations, research, preparation of pleadings and, for those qualified, actual appearances in court. The Legal Services Center, through its Director, also supervises and monitors the Apprenticeship program of the J.D. Program, including the accreditation of participating law firms and government agencies, to ensure that the thrusts of the Law School in the training of students would be covered by the apprentice programs given by participating law firms and government agencies.

RESEARCH LABORATORIES AND GROUPS

Ateneo Aperiodic Systems Lab

Primary interests include topology and dynamics of tilings and sequences arising from substitutions, as well as regularity properties of aperiodic sequences. Also interested in the application of symbolic dynamics in combinatorial game theory.

Ateneo Applied Mathematics Research Lab

This research lab encompasses different areas of research that requires mathematical modeling, namely, disease modeling, financial mathematics and flood hazard modeling. The lab has a good track record in disease modeling, having been part of the FASSSTER project since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and having produced at least 5 Scopus-indexed publications on disease models over the last 2 years. Research on flood hazard models considers the concurrent crises of COVID-19 and flood in Marikina and neighboring areas. Lastly, a different field but requires mathematical modeling as well, financial mathematics research tackles issues in risk management among local banks.

Collaborative Analytics Group

We are a mathematical modelling research group interested in applying machine learning techniques on data sets relating to health, disaster mitigation, and collective behaviour in humans and animals. Secondary interests include imitation and reinforcement learning applications.

Didactics of Mathematics Group

The Didactics of Mathematics Research Group is primarily concerned about problems pertaining to the didactical triangle of Learner-Teacher-Subject Matter, with Mathematics as the subject matter. The group is interested in studies that revolve around the theories and practices of mathematics, curriculum, its implementation, assessment and language of mathematics, the everyday use of mathematics, technical and vocational mathematics education, and relevant perspectives that give light to issues in the teaching and learning of mathematics. The Didactics of Mathematics Group utilizes a diverse set of research methodologies and pursues interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches for a deeper and broader understanding of the research problems.

Ateneo Graph Coloring Research Group

The Ateneo Graph Coloring Research Group of the Mathematics Department is interested in pursuing various problems in the field of graph theory. The specific projects that the group has focused on include the following graph coloring schemes: sigma coloring, set coloring, twin edge coloring, rainbow mean coloring. Graph operations such as the join, corona, comb product of two or more graphs, and the middle graph of a graph have also been explored. Among the specific families of graphs that the group has worked on are the Hanoi graphs, Sierpinski graphs, zero divisor graphs and ideal-based zero divisor graphs.

Ateneo Mathematical Physics Lab

Phase space methods in quantum mechanics, time-frequency and wavelet methods in signal analysis. Wigner-Weyl fomalism and Groenewold-Moyal formalism are implemented on Lie groups. Parallel methods apply to the analysis and recovery of signals, as well as filtering and denoising. The main tool is the construction of coherent states on Lie groups. Discrete quantum systems are also considered with a view towards quantum information and computing.

Ateneo Mathematics, Art, Culture and Creativity Laboratory

The research group works on projects that link mathematics to the arts and sciences, design, and Philippine culture. It has been working on research in understanding the mathematics in the artworks of the Philippine indigenous communities such as mats, baskets, tattoos and textile.

Ateneo Mathplus Resources Laboratory

The research group recognizes the advantages that technology can offer to mathematical learning, if only these can be designed well and made available easily. It envisions to design apps, databases and other software that can engage students through mathematical tasks and challenge them to investigate, make conjectures, and apply their reasoning. This group supports the implementation of the Philippine K to 12 mathematics framework, as it recognizes the affordances of technology, including manipulable objects, measuring devices, calculators, computers, smartphones, tablets, and the Internet. It is also involved in the creation of mathematical applications that support blended learning during the Covid 19 pandemic, making the applications accessible both through internet, community LTE networks and digital datacasting frameworks. The research group also conducts studies that determine the efficiency of the use of the technological tools in mathematical learning and reasoning.

Ateneo Symmetries in Algebra and Geometry Laboratory

The research group focuses on the fields of group theory, mathematical crystallography, and discrete geometry. Current research topics include geometric and crystallographic groups, tilings and polytopes, and symmetries in nature and culture. We give an emphasis on the interplay between algebraic and geometric objects in our research.

ARETÉ: OUR CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION HUB

As the creativity and innovation hub of the Ateneo de Manila University, Areté provides the space and freedom for groups from different fields and persuasions to create, collaborate on, and share knowledge, skills, and practices.

Areté's complex features theaters, art galleries, studios, laboratories, a makerspace, teaching and meeting rooms, and several open areas. These facilities enable the University to host, support, and connect academics, artists, professionals, and leaders of different talents and interests whose exchanges, we hope, will spur the kind of creativity and innovation that creates unforeseen paths and betters our communities.

Areté is thus betting on the desire of a growing many, coming together to impart and to learn, to be inspired and to be challenged, to focus but still to wander in all that could be done as a collective concerned with what is possible.

VISION

The Ateneo de Manila University Press is the supreme expression of the University's mission to contribute to nation-building. Through the crafting and production of both academic and scholarly, literary as well as non-literary works, and textbooks, ADMU Press creates a forum for great and original ideas and new knowledge that weigh on life and living in our country the Philippines.

MISSION 

With the strong conviction that our authors can fully articulate, whether in an academic or creative manner, their varying interests in diverse disciplines of learning, we publish their books and put them front and center of the public eye, so that they may generate intellectual excitement and advancement within and beyond the university, and thereby help grow a critical mass of thinkers and believers who will raise the quality of life of every Filipino.

HISTORY

Established in 1972, the Ateneo de Manila University Press first made its mark with books on the Philippines, in the humanities and social sciences, and Philippine literary works.  It has since expanded to include titles in archaeology, biography, cultural heritage, diaspora studies, governance and political change, law and society, leadership, Mindanao studies, science and society, and theology and religious studies. It looks to publish titles that reflect on the Philippines in Asia and in the world, as well as serve as venue for new directions in creative work.  

The Ateneo de Manila University Press publishes quality books on the Philippines and Asia – well-written, extensively researched, and excellently produced.  The Press’ books have been acclaimed nationally and internationally, as genuine contributions to scholarship, research, and education. 

For consistently keeping high standards in its choices of titles, in the design and production of its books, and in the effort to bring them to public attention, the Ateneo Press was cited Publisher of the Year in the 27th National Book Awards in 2008.  In addition to the National Book Awards, several of its publications have also won at the Gintong Aklat Awards.  

Recently, Thomson Reuters accepted close to 40 books released from 2008-2013 in its Book Citation Index.  This will enable the Ateneo de Manila University Press and its authors to reach a broader audience base and allow the selection of books to be measured in terms of citation impact.  The Ateneo de Manila University Press shall continue to submit its new titles for inclusion in this prestigious index.  

The Ateneo Press is professionally affiliated with the Book Development Association of the Philippines, the Society of Scholarly Publishers, the World Association of Christian Communicators, and the International Association of Scholarly Publishers.
