Vatica mangachapoi ssp. mangachapoi, also known commonly as Narig, is a native Philippine dipterocarp species.
A relatively small tree for a dipterocarp, Narig grows up to 20 meters tall in the wild. Its branches are covered with stellate hairs, while its leaves are oblong to oblanceolate in shape with a leathery texture and a glabrous surface, margins entire, apex acuminate or acute while base is rounded or truncate, its petiole is also puberulent. Inflorescence is paniculate, panicles terminal or axillary in position with similar pubescence with the branches, calyx is grayish yellow and pubescent with unequal ovate-lanceolate or oblong sepals. The fruit is globose with papery wings used for dispersal via wind. Narig occurs in primary forests up to 800 masl. They are observed to flower in May (Bataan). The wood is used for high-grade construction, posts, salt-water pilings, bobbins/shuttles, and scientific/engineering equipment. Dipterocarp seeds are recalcitrant and easily lose viability when dried or stored long. After cutting the wings, the seeds should be planted in a potting medium as soon as possible.
