Kupang (Parkia timoriana (DC.) Merr.)

Botanical Description

Kupang (Sandoricum koetjape), also known as Tree Bean, is a tall tree that can reach up to 50 meters in height. It has bipinnate leaves with closely spaced leaflets with alternating phyllotaxy. Its inflorescence is borne on a head, the mimosoid inflorescence distinct appearance lends it the semblance of a tennis ball. Once mature the flower develops into a dehiscent pod measuring around 27 centimeters in length.

Uses:

  • The flower, young pods, and seeds are edible, the pods are especially prized among various cultural cuisines. 

  • The pods are burnt and used as an insect repellent by the Ayta. 

  • The seeds supposedly have many medicinal uses such as being used to treat ulcers, diabetes, and nephritis to name a few. 

  • The leaves and barks are used to treat wounds and other skin diseases. 

  • The wood can be used for construction. 

  • The pods can also be processed to create a shampoo; the pods can also be used to extract a red dye.
