Malak-malak (Palaquium philippense (Perr.) C.B.Rob.)

Botanical Description

Malak-malak (Palaquium philippense) also known as Red Nato is a tall tree that can reach up to 25 meters in height. Its leaves are distinct as its abaxial and adaxial surfaces are of different colors, the adaxial side is green while the abaxial side of the leaf while the underside of the leaf is brown. It produces an oval fruit with a single seed; the seed of the plant is known to yield an oil when processed.

Uses:

  • The oil extracted from the seeds is used for preparing food and as lantern fuel.

  • The wood is used for construction and furniture making.

  • The tree is also planted as an ornamental due to its unique leaves. They are also recommended for urban greening.
