Botanical Description
The Mountain Date Palm (Phoenix loureiroi) also known locally as Voyavoy is largely similar to the date palm but smaller and seen throughout the wild in the Philippines. It grows near rivers and streams, prefers the shade. It has a thick, rough stem due to the scars left behind by the leaves and the persistent petiole. The leaves are long and pinnate. Dioecious, sepals ovate-oblong, male florets with 6 anthers, female flowers have a short stigma and style. The flower develops into an ovate drupe that is smooth and sweet.

Known as “Voyavoy” by the Ivatan people they use it to create headwear and vests by harvesting fibers from its leaves, the leaves can also be used for making mats and brooms.

The young leaves and the fruits are edible.
