History of gender in Ateneo

1859

The Spanish Jesuits take over the Escuela Municipal, then a small private school maintained for 30 children of Spanish residents.


1865

Escuela Municipal becomes Ateneo Municipal de Manila, offering the bachillerato as well as technical courses leading to certificates in agriculture, surveying, and business.


1921

American Jesuits take over administration of the school, removing “Municipal” from its name, becoming, simply, Ateneo de Manila.

1932

The Ateneo transfers to the Padre Faura campus in Manila after the Intramuros campus is destroyed by a fire.

1945

Manila is liberated. During the war, the Padre Faura campus meets destruction.

1950

The Ateneo begins offering graduate courses in Business, accepting female enrollees.

1952

The university transfers to its current location, Loyola Heights in Quezon City.


1973

The first batch of female enrollees enters Ateneo.


2009

Ateneo celebrates its Sesquicentennial Anniversary.

2013

Schools in the Philippines are mandated to transition to a K-12 curriculum. The Ateneo de Manila Junior High School is established.


2015

Ateneo de Manila Senior High School, envisioned to be a Jesuit, Filipino, Catholic college-preparatory senior high school, opens.


2016

Female students are admitted to the Ateneo Senior High School after 156 years of being a school exclusive to boys. The ratio of boys to girls is 7:3.


2018

University President Fr Jose Ramon T Villarin SJ presents his AMDG 2030 Strategic Plan, which includes increasing “access to Ateneo education. Establish a more diverse studentry and academic community.”

The University Gender Hub is established to help safeguard female and LGBTQ+ students’ welfare on campus. 

2019

The ratio of male-to-female students in the Senior High School is 3:1.


2023

Becoming fully co-educational in all levels by the year 2030 becomes a Magis Aspiration, as announced by University President Fr Roberto C Yap SJ.

2023

Fr Jonjee Sumpaico SJ, Vice President for Basic Education tells Fabilioh! that becoming fully co-ed is “a natural progression of Ateneo’s mission.”

2024

Girls are admitted to Kinder, Grade 1, and Junior High School.
