 AGSB Research Agenda

AGSB aims to foster the virtuous cycle of knowing, through faculty and student research, and doing - linking scholarly research to real-world practice.

In the disciplines of management and leadership that AGSB occupies, our research identity is that of a scientist-practitioner.

As scientists we aim to conduct research for thought leadership in the disciplines of management and leadership (rigor). We study specific contexts for these disciplines, recognizing that management and leadership are context-specific, thus we locate these studies in industries and in professions where these disciplines are practiced. We synthesize knowledge from various sources. We derive hypotheses. We build models. We undertake research or conduct experiments. We generate insights from our research. This type of research enters the knowledge base through different channels - through publication in academic journals, through inclusion in Ateneo publications, and through public seminars.

As practitioners we apply science to our management and leadership work (relevance). We derive theories from work applications. We relate and apply research to real-business-world problems. We measure and reflect on the impact of interventions. We generate insights empirically. This type of research enters the knowledge base as case studies to be used as teaching instruments, as best practices catalogued in AGSB publications, and as collaborations between faculty and students.

The products of AGSB's twin lenses of scientist and practitioner could thus be categorized into these four types of research outputs:

1. Scholarly work. This represents the research work that is the staple of research in universities. From the ADMU Research Manual: & quote; Scholarly work [aims]... at opening new paths of intellectual exploration and pursuing scholarly investigation using the appropriate methodologies of one’s discipline and compliant with the highest ethical standards. Their ultimate goal is to contribute to knowledge.& quote;

2. Research for instructional materials. For an institution for management education like AGSB, research is a purposive activity directed at the classroom. The output for this research is in the form of cases and in models and frameworks that provide students with templates for practice.

3. Applied research or Praxis. AGSB aspires to conduct primary research to solve problems for which the business sector plays a role by illuminating the problems of society and/or contributing solutions. The output of this research is in the form of articles on these solutions, found in AGSB publications, and the societal issues they address.

4. Research for thought leadership. Similar to scholarly work in terms of seeking new paths in intellectual explorations, but different in terms of the media in which it is conveyed, this type of research would aim to advance an intellectual stance or advocate for a viewpoint that would influence thinking and practice in general management, in leadership, or in a particular discipline. Aside from publications, an important outlet for this research is webinars participated in by both the School's direct stakeholders and by the general public.
