PhD in Leadership Studies

Body

PhD in Leadership Studies (PhD LEADS) - Business Leadership

  1. What is Leadership Studies?
Leadership Studies is a multidisciplinary academic field of study that focuses on leadership in organizational contexts and in human life. Leadership studies traces its origins in the social sciences (e.g., sociology, anthropology, psychology), in humanities (e.g., history and philosophy), as well as in professional and applied fields of study (e.g., management and education). It looks into leadership theories and concepts that bridge scholarship and practice in an increasingly complex world.

  1. What value will PhD-LEADS add to my career?
PhD LEADS seeks to look at theory, practice and research, in terms of the person of the leader and the transformation of business organizations, such as corporations, business entrepreneurships, or social entrepreneurships. The program develops scientist-practitioners who can build knowledge, theory and practice on Asian and Philippine leadership, especially in business leadership or organization development (PhDLEADS- Business Leadership or Organizational Development).

  1. Who can take PhD LEADS – BL or OD?
The PhD in Leadership Studies program is a straight program and, therefore, requires only a bachelor's degree in any field from a recognized college or university with a general undergraduate average of 85% or its equivalent. The candidate needs to show the following:
  • Five (5) years work experience with at least two (2) years of leadership experience
  • A satisfactory score in the graduate school entrance examination
  • Adequate motivation and career direction to be determined through an interview
  • Statement of qualification and recommendation from three references
  • Personal essay
In case the candidate has a Master’s degree in a related field, a maximum of 18 units may be waived. For example, someone with an MBA may have the following courses waived for the PhD LEADS - Business Leadership;
  • Economics for Managers
  • Principles of Strategic Management
  • Business Ethics
  • Human Resource Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Financial Management
Someone with MA Psychology may have the following courses waived for the PhD LEADS - Organizational Development:
  • Organizational Psychology
  • Psychology of Planned Change
  • Human Resource Development
  • Strategic Business Partnering
  • OD Interventions
  • Process Facilitation

  1. Is there a comparable degree in other schools in the Philippines?
This is the first course in leadership studies (or leadership) in the Philippines. The only related degrees are graduate degrees in education, major in educational leadership.
  • UA&P – MA in Education, major in Educational Leadership
  • DLSU – M of Education, major in Educational Leadership; PhD in Education, major in Educational Leadership
  • UST - PhD in Education, major in Educational Management and Leadership
Furthermore, graduate programs tend to be uni-disciplinal even when leadership requires a multi-disciplinary perspective. In particular, PhD programs in Philippine business schools tend to focus on financial or economic management and there is inadequate focus on enabling organizational innovation, systems thinking, and sustainability.

  1. Do I need to take pre-requisites to enroll for PhD LEADS?
