Academic Programs

The Environmental Science programs integrate various principles derived from the natural sciences, the social sciences, law, and management. ES graduates are prepared to meet a variety of situations and challenges. Our programs aim to form technically competent, socially responsible and culturally rooted environmental practitioners who will lead in industry, government and civil society.

Undergraduate Programs

BS Environmental Science

The BS Environmental Science (BS ES) curriculum combines the empirical focus of the natural sciences with the pro-active methodologies of management and the social sciences. It provides a broad disciplinary foundation needed to address many of today’s complex environmental problems.
The updated 4-year BS ES program, effective 1st Semester of S.Y. 2018-2019, features a strong interdisciplinary foundation that enables a holistic study of the environment and equips students with analytical skills for studying environmental patterns, trends and models. The program also features a variety of electives that students can choose from and hands-on experiences through field and laboratory work to provide students more exposure towards their areas of interest.

Graduate Programs

Master in Environmental Management

The Master in Environmental Management (MEM) program aims to respond to the needs of environmental management professionals from the government, business and industry, non-governmental organizations, consultancy firms and academe. It is a professional non-thesis master’s program that aims to equip the student with the basic concepts in Environmental Science and Engineering needed to undertake Environmental Management, as well as the essential background in Environmental Economics, Ethics, Law and Policy.

Master of Science in Environmental Science

The Master of Science in Environmental Science (MS ES) covers the entire range of field and specialization needed to have a more holistic understanding of environmental problems. It includes basic scientific and technical concepts in Environmental Science to the more in-depth study of specific environmental compartments like soil, water, air and biota and other courses such as law and policy, ethics, culture, economics and many others. It provides students with advanced knowledge in resource conservation and pollution management, to equip researchers with technical skills in identifying, analyzing and developing innovative solutions to environmental problems and link environmental research to policy, economic and/or social issues. A master’s thesis will culminate the program of the student.

Master in Disaster Risk and Resilience

The Master in Disaster Risk and Resilience (MDRR) is designed to advance interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches to addressing risk and building resilience. The program integrates theory, methods and skills in both the physical and social sciences into a problem-focused and solutions-driven program that employs the systems thinking lens of analysis. This programs aims to produce leaders, managers, and professionals who can build capacities in disaster risk and resilience in their respective sectors and be able to work in collaborative decision-making platforms.

Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science

The Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science (PhD in ES) program aims to develop trained environmental scientists with advanced knowledge and skills for careers in research, the academe, industries, and government. It emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches that balance depth of knowledge in a specific field with a larger systems perspective of environmental science and management. The program is intended for students already having an MS degree in ES or allied fields. It is designed to build on master’s level skills and to deepen analysis in a specific area of research while allowing for flexibility to encourage creative thinking and innovativeness.
