Graduate Degree Programs

The Ateneo Department of Mathematics is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Mathematics by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education. The department prepares students for careers that require analytical thinking and quantitative skills by providing them with a solid foundation in pure mathematics and exposing them to applied areas, such as actuarial science, mathematical finance, operations research and scientific computing.

The Department of Mathematics offers the following graduate degree programs:

  • Master of Science in Mathematics

The Master of Science in Mathematics (MS Math) program is an Academic Track program intended for students who have completed an undergraduate degree in mathematics (or who have taken a sufficient number of undergraduate mathematics courses) and who are interested in enriching and deepening their mathematical knowledge. The program may serve to prepare students for further theoretical or applied research in mathematics or to equip students with sufficient mathematical expertise that may be needed for professional practice in different fields.

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics

The Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics (PhD Math) program is an Academic Track program intended for students who have completed a master’s degree in mathematics and who intend to continue their development and immersion in pure mathematics research. The program further deepens the knowledge of students in the general areas of theoretical mathematics while also preparing them for specializing in a particular area of mathematical research. The program culminates in a doctoral dissertation in which students are expected to produce original contributions that advance the theory of their area of specialization.

  • Master in Mathematics Education

The Master in Mathematics Education (M MathEd) degree program is a professional track program primarily intended for upper elementary and high school mathematics teachers who wish to improve their teaching skills at the K-12 levels by increasing their knowledge of mathematics content and pedagogy. This program is also open to graduates who are intent on pursuing a career in mathematics education, particularly in the areas of classroom teaching, curriculum development, and assessment at the upper elementary or high school level.

  • Master of Science in Mathematics Education

The Master of Science in Mathematics Education (MS MathEd) degree program is an academic track program primarily intended for upper elementary and high school mathematics teachers who wish to improve their teaching skills at the K-12 levels and capacity for research by increasing their knowledge of mathematics content and pedagogy. This program is also open to graduates who are intent on pursuing a career in mathematics education, particularly in the areas of classroom teaching, curriculum development, and assessment at the upper elementary or high school level.

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education

The Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education (PhD MathEd) is a degree program by research. It is intended for students who possess a strong mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, and see themselves as contributing to the advancement of the field of mathematics education through significant and rigorous scholarly research.
