Clean Water and Sanitation

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

The Ateneo Institute of Sustainability and Central Facilities and Management Office work together to promote appropriate water resource management. To ensure responsible water use, the institution has put in place a number of measures, including tracking water consumption, creating catchment basins, treating wastewater, and reusing water. Plants on campus are watered using natural rainwater collection systems, while wastewater is treated using the Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS).

Also, by promoting awareness through information and communication, the institution hopes to promote conservation. This is a team effort involving numerous offices, organizations run by students, such as the Ateneo Environmental Science Society (ESS) and research centers like the Ateneo Innovation Center. The university works to offer communities around the nation project-based access to clean water.

Ateneo Water Report: Keeping the Tap Safe (FY 2023–2025)

Clean and safe drinking water remains a priority at Ateneo, thanks to the steady work of the Office for Food Safety and Quality Assurance (OFSQA) and the Central Facilities Management Office (CFMO). Over the past two school years, chemical tests showed consistently safe results, while microbiological checks improved through quick corrective actions like cleaning and retesting. By 2024–2025, the water system not only met but exceeded national standards, with consistently high compliance. Fewer concerns were reported by the community, and none were traced back to the water supply itself. As Ateneo’s population grows to over 28,000, the next focus is ensuring access, with more drinking fountains planned—especially for Senior High, Ortigas, and Loyola Higher Education campuses.
