Study on Community Sensing on Mobility

In recent years, Ateneo de Manila University has strengthened its commitment to ecological conversion through its pursuit of becoming a Laudato Si’ and carbon-neutral University. This commitment calls for concrete transformation in campus systems and every practice of the Ateneo community, including mobility-related routines and systems, which directly influences environmental impact, public health, and overall community well-being.

Mobility within the Ateneo Loyola Heights Campus has historically been developing around motorized transport, shaped by existing infrastructure, access arrangements, and broader urban mobility conditions. As the Ateneo community continues to expand, it is imperative to understand the diverse mobility patterns of its community members and align it to the campus transport systems rooted in the University’s sustainability, environmental, and public health commitments.

While several mobility studies and discussions have already been conducted, such as those by the 2012 Ateneo Traffic Group and the 2024 Campus Mobility Forum, and initiatives like the e-jeeps system , their success ultimately depends on meaningful stakeholder engagement. This can be done by following the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, which emphasizes that effective action must be grounded in the context and experiences of the community, recognizing how community members perceive, navigate, and prioritize mobility in their everyday lives.

Spearheaded by the Organizational Sustainability (OS) Program of the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability, the Saan Tayo Lulugar?: Mobility Study is a Loyola Heights Campus-wide study seeking to establish a baseline understanding of campus mobility by examining the lived experiences of various Ateneo community members. By focusing on three key stakeholders (e.g., car users, active mobility users, and parents of Basic Education), the study aims to generate evidence-based insights to guide context-sensitive and socially acceptable mobility interventions.

Objectives

The study aims to:

  1. collect and analyze the mobility profiles and transportation preferences of Ateneo stakeholders;
  2. assess the willingness of different stakeholder profiles (i.e.: car users, active mobility users, and parents of Basic Education students) in adopting proposed mobility policies and alternatives, and;
  3. provide actionable, feasible, data-driven, and community-informed policies and recommendations to improve the sustainable mobility options within the Ateneo Loyola Heights Campus.
