The Ateneo Institute of Sustainability (AIS) was established in 2013 as the hub of the university’s environment-development agenda under then President Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin. Today, we continue our mission as the university hub of sustainability, with a deeper appreciation for this mission as inspired by the reflections of the Laudato Si’ on integral ecology, and serve as the vehicle of the university’s environment-development agenda towards the achieving the Ateneo de Manila University strategic goals:

  1. To mainstream sustainable development;
  2. To reduce disaster risk due to climate change and other geohazards; and
  3. To build a sustainable campus

To achieve the strategic goals, the AIS

  1. Engages stakeholders through consultation and participation in surveys, discussions, and workshops;
  2. Connects with university stakeholders as well as partners in communities, business, global organizations and networks to achieve sustainable development goals; and
  3. Prepares stakeholders by deepening their competencies, culture, and commitment to sustainability and resilience

Vision and Mission

As a Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit University, the Ateneo de Manila seeks to preserve, to extend, and to communicate truth and apply it to the development of persons and the preservation of their environment.

Vision

Our mission is to promote integral ecology and a culture of sustainability and resilience across the University and its partners through incubating and mainstreaming innovative practices.

Mission

AIS is a leader and catalyst for mainstreaming integral ecology and transforming partners into
sustainable and resilient communities.

Strategic Objectives

The AIS mission involves the following strategic goals (note: this should be considered a “living
document” pending refinement of the Lux in Domino strategic plan and translation into the
plans of the different clusters and units):

  1. To create synergy and achieve impact by coordinating and aligning the policies and
    activities of the university and affiliate units in the areas of integral ecology,
    sustainability and resilience.
  2. To contribute to the body of knowledge on integral ecology, sustainability and
    resilience through interdisciplinary research.
  3. To leverage our academic expertise and resources in mobilizing knowledge into
    innovative solutions, policy-making, and capacity development in integral ecology,
    sustainability and resilience.
  4. To promote awareness and the mainstreaming of integral ecology, sustainability and
