Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Program

Education and synergy for sustainable futures

Our Identity

The 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted unanimously by the 193 countries including the Philippines in September 2015, provides a comprehensive and measurable benchmark to end extreme poverty and reduce hunger, promote economic prosperity, deepen social inclusion, and strengthen environmental sustainability in the world. Achieving the goals stated in the SDGs requires a broad-based transformation in the economic, social, political, and technological dimensions of human life, which need to be supported by cross-disciplinary systems thinking and the rapid upscaling of sustainable development technologies and know-how. Integral to achieving the SDGs are partnerships and education.

The SDG Program of AIS serves as an avenue to mainstream Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and sustainability synergy via different networks. Working with the different academic units and student organizations, the Program designs modules that seek to build competences pertinent in addressing the world’s wicked problems reflected in the SDGs. Integral to this is the capacity building on ESD of faculty and professionals and sustainability leadership of student groups and organizations. Through this, the Program aims to embed sustainability and integral ecology to be part of the lexicon of the different stakeholders of the University. Additionally, the Program strives to strengthen its knowledge and keeps up to the trends of sustainable development through synergizing with networks. Thus, the Program engages with numerous national and regional networks, such as the ASEAN University Network for Ecological Education and Culture (AUN-EEC), Promotion of Sustainability in Postgraduate Education and Research Network (ProSPER.Net), and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Philippines (SDSN PH).

Our Priority Areas

Deepen the knowledge and orientation of University stakeholders on the SDGs

The SDG Program performs the role of mainstreaming the SDGs to the different stakeholders of the various units of the university. The Program focuses on the development of modules orienting these different stakeholders on sustainable development and the trends and updates on the SDGs. Along with this, the Program also seeks a more purposeful and meaningful way to integrate sustainability in the inherent language of the students by encouraging the inclusion of education for sustainable development into the academic curricula and formation programs. The Program also provides consultancy advice for university units who wish to develop curricular and extra-curricular programs on sustainability and resilience. Projects and events in support of this priority area include:

  • Laudato Si’ University-wide Baseline Study
  • Online campaign on monthly observances on SDGs
  • Radyo Katipunan Show, Footprints: Stories of Sustainability

Strengthen ecological education and culture for sustainable development in universities

The SDGs Program creates avenues for advancing pedagogical innovations and effective communication strategies on sustainability, integral ecology, and ESD. The Program promotes ESD as an integral ecological framework which covers academic, formative, and co-curricular aspects of student education. This encompasses technical knowledge on sustainable development and formation of sustainability leadership. Additionally, by serving as the Secretariat of the AUN-EEC, the Program assists in the formation of youth in Southeast Asia, who possess the mentality to conserve and protect the environment, and address socio-ecological challenges. Projects and events in support of this priority area include:

  • Annual AUN-EEC Webinar
  • Annual AUN-EEC Conference on Ecological Education and Culture
  • Annual AUN-EEC Workshop
  • Education for Sustainable Development modules for teachers training
  • Sustainable Events Toolkit
  • SDG thematic events

Synergize sustainability initiatives in the University and throughout the country

The SDGs Program aims to promote high-quality education and research collaboration for sustainable development within Ateneo de Manila, among universities, and research centers. By partaking in numerous networks, the Program harmoniously weaves the initiatives of various universities into diverse working groups and consortia focused on different SDG-thematic areas and transformations. The program also plays a key role in localizing and mobilizing support for the SDGs, including supporting national and local governments, business and local communities in understanding and addressing the challenges of sustainable development. Projects and events in support of this priority area include:

  • SDG 2 Zero Hunger Working Group webinars
  • Various projects of the SDSN PH Education for Sustainable Development Working Group
  • Various projects of the ProSPER.Net Expert Advisory Panel on Circular Economy
