The Ateneo Gokongwei Brothers School of Education and Learning Design invites everyone to join Dr Lou Antolihao lecturer at the Department of Sociology, National University of Singapore, and author of Playing with the Big Boys: Basketball, American Imperialism, and Subaltern Discourse in the Philippines, and put the "search" back in research.
The presentation will be held online on Friday, 22 April 2022 at 4:00 PM. You may register through go.ateneo.edu/respondingtochaos.
What is the relevance of social research in the age of fake news? What is the role of researchers in a world that considers knowledge “elitist”? This presentation seeks to answer these questions by revisiting the fundamental tenets of social research, examining the conditions that led to its marginalization in contemporary society, and by exploring ways it can meaningfully contribute to the shaping of our future. It suggests a greater emphasis on “searching” in researching to help students better address concerns regarding the purpose of their inquiry, their data-gathering skills, the resources needed, finding informants, and research ethics.
