Chinese language, Chinese culture, Chinese people.  What is the "Chinese" referred to here?

Is there any difference between the Chinese in mainland China and the people who hail from the Chinese diaspora?

This course is a primer on Chinese socio-linguistics and cross-cultural communication, covering a wide range of interesting real-life scenarios and case studies involving anthropological, socio-linguistic, psychological, and communicative evidence. The course is taught entirely in English, and Chinese language proficiency is not required.
