Symposium on Asian Regional Security Challenges and Opportunities
The security situation in Asia remains precarious. In response to China's increasing assertiveness in the region, Japan, the Philippines, and the United States recalibrated their long-standing alliance. For example, Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio vowed to double their Self-Defense budge from 1 to 2 percent of the country's GDP. This development provided the needed boost to deepen the existing military ties between Japan and the Philippines. Meanwhile, the US and the Philippines jointly announced the expansion of the Enhanced Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), thus providing access for US troops to four additional sites in the Philippines. Given these developments, what are the possible implications of these alliances on overall Asian regional security?
