Electricity and Economic Development: Evidence from Half a Century in the Philippines
Dr. Kyle Emerick's research delves into the long-term impact of electricity infrastructure in the Philippines, revealing that the first electricity cooperatives established in the 1970s continue to enjoy benefits such as more infrastructure, increased electricity consumption, and lower prices. However, the study suggests that the expected boost in household consumption is limited, as population size adjusts instead. This highlights the significant amenity value of electricity, shedding light on the multifaceted impacts of electrification in developing regions.
