The Patch-Work City: Class, Space, and Politics in Metro Manila
On 19 October 2023, the Ateneo de Manila University Press is launching Marco Z Garrido’s newest book, “The Patch-Work City: Class, Space, and Politics in Metro Manila.” The book illuminates how segregation, class relations, and democracy are intricately connected, making clear that class as a social structure is indispensable to the study of cities in the Global South. An associate professor of sociology at the University of Chicago, Garrido documents the fragmentation of Manila into a “patchwork” of classed spaces, particularly slums and upper- and middle-class enclaves.
