Households preferences for renewable energy across ASEAN cities
Daniel del Barrio Álvarez, an assistant professor at the International Project Laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Tokyo, presents the findings of collaborative research on households' preferences for renewable energy in urban areas across eight Southeast Asian countries. In his presentation, he discusses the results of a comprehensive study that includes a comparative analysis of willingness-to-pay (WTP) for various renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, mini-hydro, biomass, and geothermal, taking into account local contexts. The research reveals widespread support for solar energy across all cities studied, with diverse public perceptions regarding other renewable sources. Notably, respondents prioritize environmental issues such as air pollution and flooding over climate change when presented separately. The findings underscore the complexity of consumer acceptance of energy technology, emphasizing the importance of understanding public acceptance from the demand side in future policymaking for a just and orderly transition in the future electricity system. Daniel del Barrio Álvarez's research interests encompass sustainability transition, energy studies, and social innovation, with a current focus on energy transition in Southeast Asia at both national and regional scales, as well as research on energy, sustainable development, and regional revitalization.
