Contextual Approaches to Clinical Pedagogy: Philosophy and Psychology in Education
This lecture introduces the field of Clinical Pedagogy, which combines Philosophy and Psychology in Education. It begins with the philosophy of education of pragmatists John Dewey, G.H. Mead, and William James, and their view of education as learning to flexibly adapt to one’s environment, both individually and as groups. It then argues that these insights need the contemporary psychological field of Contextual Behavioral Science (CBS), particularly the practices of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and ProSocial, in order to support such flexible adaptation. But in the process of this linking, it suggests core insights about what science is, the problem of individualism, and the tension between spirituality and control.
