Building the Economic Momentum: Outlook and Imperatives
Certain strengths and challenges have emerged in the recent post-pandemic performance of the Philippine economy. The session will examine various opportunities to build a domestic economic momentum over the short- to medium-term in the face of continuing external pressures.
Speakers and Topics:
Cielito F. Habito: "Building Momentum on a Strong Backbone"
Apart from applying his usual “PiTiK Test” examining price, employment and income trends in the economy, Dr. Habito will focus on how the economy’s backbone, the agriculture and fisheries sector, could be transformed from drag to driver of a nascent economic momentum, drawing from his new book No Free Lunch: Essays on Philippine Agriculture, which he has personally presented to DA Secretary Francisco Tiu-Laurel.
Dr. Alvin Ang: "Easing the Economy’s Blood Flow: Financial Sector Trends and Outlook”
The financial sector, often called the economy’s lifeblood, has been reeling from global pressures that have been manifested in escalated commodity prices, high interest rates, and heavy fiscal pressures on governments around the world. Dr. Ang will examine recent financial trends and outlooks, and their implications on the “PiTiK" performance of the real economy.
Guest Speaker:
Former Finance Secretary Gary Teves: "Imperatives for Catch-Up Development"
Secretary Teves will discuss critical and overdue reforms that the Philippines needs to pursue in order to catch up with its more dynamic neighbors, and the challenges in navigating the political economy landscape, from his unique perspective as a skilled technocrat who also had past direct political experience as an elected Representative in the Philippine Congress.
