Confronting the Care Crisis: A Brown Bag Session on the Nursing Crisis in the Philippines
The Ateneo School of Government, through the Ateneo Policy Center, will be hosting a brown bag session on the nursing crisis in the Philippines on 18 April 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
The global healthcare sector faces a severe shortage of nurses, exacerbated by ageing populations and increased demand for health services. This shortage is particularly acute in the Philippines, as we struggle to meet our healthcare needs. The absence of a unified national database of nurses, disparities in remuneration among public and private nurses, differences between local and international wages, and the policy and operational gaps in enforcing migrant labor laws are some of the identified challenges compounding the crisis. Addressing this shortage is critical if we are to achieve genuine universal health care.
In this session, Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go will present two working papers under the nursing crisis series. The first study titled “Confronting the Care Crisis: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Nursing Crisis in the Philippines” identifies the critical issues that compound the nursing shortage in the country and offers policy recommendations to resolve them.
Meanwhile, the second paper, titled “Navigating the Nursing Exodus: Investigating Philippines’ Bilateral Labor Agreements on Nursing Migration”, investigates the Philippines’ bilateral labor agreements (or lack thereof) with four major destination countries, namely the United Kingdom, Austria, the United States, and Saudi Arabia.
