A Narrative Analysis of Treatment Adherence among Persons Who Use Drugs in the Philippines
by Katrien D. Belen, PhD in Psychology Candidate
ABSTRACT:
This study explores the adherence journey of People Who Use Drugs (PWUDs) in the Philippines through a narrative analysis. It focuses on the Community-Based Drug Rehabilitation Program, specifically the Katatagan Kalusugan at Kadamayan sa Komunidad (KKDK). Using a narrative approach, this study compared the adherence journey between those who completed and did not complete the KKDK program, as well as how their adherence narratives progress over time. Guided by Murray’s (2000) narrative analysis, results reveal that key narratives emerge at distinct stages of the treatment. Key differences between completers and non-completers also showed their cost-benefit perception of treatment and definitions of recovery. The study discusses implications for program implementation, emphasizing the need for timely and nuanced adherence support to both completers and non-completers.
