Nature-based Solutions and Citizen Science for Flood Monitoring
A talk and small-group discussion with
Dr Erich Wolff, Utrecht University
25 November 2025 (Tuesday) | 2:00-4:00pm
Heyden Hall, Manila Observatory (entirely on-site)
Join us for an intimate discussion on trends in nature-based solutions in the Asia Pacific, and on the use of citizen science for flood monitoring. The forum shall serve as an opportunity for nature-based and urban sustainability researchers in Ateneo to share opportunities for collaboration.
About the speaker
Dr Erich Wolff is a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University. His work critically reflects on the social, political, cultural, and ecological dimensions of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation. He is currently working on the governance of nature in cities including aspects of citizen participation, institutional frameworks, and monitoring and evaluation. He is an enthusiast of 'citizen science' as a tool to decentralise decision-making and engage non-scientists in knowledge production.
He obtained his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and Masters in Geotechnics from Universidade de Brasilia. He obtained his PhD from Monash University in Australia, and he did his postdoc at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His PhD work focused on alternative ways of understanding floods in data-poor contexts, such as Fiji and Indonesia, by combining community-based ways of making sense of water with conventional flood-modelling frameworks. He also served as a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania and a lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne.
He is part of the 80 experts who developed the Global Roadmap for Urban Nature-based Solutions. The Asia and Oceania reports of the Roadmap will be launched in Manila this November.
The talk is open to the Ateneo de Manila community.
