In a world increasingly shaped by intelligent systems and data-driven technologies, how can machines that see deepen human understanding and improve lives? This question comes as advances in computer vision and machine learning are helping both people and computers see the world differently, in everything from traffic management to medical diagnostics. Drawing from the journey of building the Ateneo Laboratory for Intelligent Visual Environments (ALIVE), this talk explores the challenges, breakthroughs, and possibilities that emerge from creating research ecosystems that connect technical innovation with real-world relevance—where technology, teamwork, and purpose come alive.

Dr Pai Abu is the Chair of the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science of Ateneo de Manila University's School of Science and Engineering (SOSE) and the Head/Coordinator of the Ateneo Laboratory for Intelligent Visual Environment (ALIVE). ALIVE aims to improve the detection and classification of objects using image processing and machine learning methods through the use of digital images with implementations on biomedical-related applications, traffic and pedestrian monitoring and surveillance.

This event is organized by the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation (OAVP-RCWI) in cooperation with the University Marketing and Communications Office (UMCO).
