Bending Toward Justice: A Forum on the ICC, the Duterte Case, and Victim Participation
The Fr. Joaquin G. Bernas, SJ Institute for Continuing Legal Education invites legal scholars, students, civil society actors, and members of the public to the third installment of its On the Sounding Board series, entitled 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞: 𝐀 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐂𝐂, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐦 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.
The forum will examine the legal processes of the International Criminal Court in relation to the ongoing proceedings involving former President Rodrigo Duterte, and explore the broader questions of accountability under international law.
The discussion will feature a panel composed of a Case Manager for the Legal Representatives of Victims and the Co-Chairperson of the Philippine Coalition for the International Criminal Court. It will address how the ICC functions in practice, the role of due process in international criminal proceedings, and the challenges faced by victims in seeking meaningful participation in the pursuit of justice.
As public attention turns toward developments in the case, the forum aims to provide a clearer understanding of the legal frameworks that govern international justice and the responsibilities that accompany them.
