Ateneo provides a well-balanced program of activities and experiences to develop academic competence and a commitment to Christian values. It strives to form its students into young Catholic Christian men who will become leaders in the service of God and mankind.

Its first rector was Fr. Jose Fernandez Cuevas, then Superior of the Society of Jesus in the Philippine Province.
