Itinatag ang AILAP bilang tagapangalaga ng iba’t ibang gawaing pampanitikan at pang-sining sa loob at labas ng Pamantasang Ateneo de Manila. Nais makapag-ambag ang AILAP sa higit pang ikauunlad ng panitikan sa bansa sa pamamagitan ng pagbubuo ng samahan ng mga manunulat at mga alagad ng sining. Isinasakatuparan nito ang ganitong adhikain sa pamamagitan ng paglulunsad ng Ateneo National Writers Workshop (ANWW) at iba pang mga kultural na gawain.
The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) was established as a center in the service of various literary arts and practices at the Ateneo and elsewhere. Through the Ateneo National Writers Workshop (ANWW) and other cultural endeavors, AILAP aims to contribute to the development of literature in the country by building a community of writers nationwide who are bound by the pursuit of excellence in their craft.
