Body

The Ateneo Center for Economic Research and Development (ACERD) was founded in 1989 as the research unit of the Department of Economics in economics and economic policy. ACERD directs and manages the research activities of the Department of Economics that focus on applied economics and public policy in order to enhance teaching and contribute to policy debates and formulation in the Philippines, both of which are necessary for nation building.

The ACERD exists

  1. to provide material and moral support to research and training in economics;
  2. to undertake, conduct, disseminate and publish research work, policy studies, programs and projects, and;
  3. to establish, develop, promote and coordinate the exchange of knowledge and skills, linkages, and other mutually beneficial relationships with other institutions.

Ateneo Macroeconomic Research Unit (MRU)

The Macroeconomic Research Unit (MRU) was established by the ACERD in 2000 as an economic research and forecasting unit of the Department of Economics. The MRU gives regular economic briefings to public and private audiences, including a regular Quarterly Economic Briefing for the public.

The MRU has completed and operationalized the Ateneo Macroeconomic Forecasting Model (AMFM) which yields forecasts of key economic indicators like GDP, inflation, and unemployment.

The AMFM was described in a recent PIDS survey paper as the only operational full macroeconometric model of the Philippine economy outside the government.

On July 6, 2002, the model was launched in a convocation commemorating 50 years of Economics at Ateneo, graced by Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The MRU produces research relevant to the development of the AMFM (e.g. labor and the macroeconomy, trade and macroeconomy, current macroeonomic models in the Philippines, etc.).
