ASOG faculty publishes paper on US-PH bilateral relationship on Foreign Policy Association book

26 Sep 2019

Ateneo School of Government Professor and Ateneo Policy Center Senior Research Fellow Julio Amador III’s paper on US-PH bilateral relationship was recently published in Great Decisions, the publication of Foreign Policy Association a non-profit think tank based in New York.

Prof Amador’s article discusses the special relationship of the Philippines with the United States, which started when the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century.  However, fast-forward to the election of Rodrigo Duterte, the country has pivoted more toward China, and away from the U.S. Duterte has also launched a large-scale war on drugs that many in the international community—including some prominent American leaders--criticize for its brutality. What does the future hold for U.S, relations with the Philippines? Prof Amador outlines some of the salient issues in present day US-Philippines bilateral relationship.

Prof. Amador served as Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Service Institute from 2014-2017. He has worked on and maintained policy and research interests in ASEAN integration, International Relations of Southeast Asia, the Political-Economy of ASEAN, US-China-ASEAN dynamics, and Philippine Foreign Policy and National Security. He is currently teaching National Security and International Relations for the Master in Public Management (MPM) Program at Ateneo School of Government.
