ASOG hosted presentation on Chinese public opinion and international crises

Last December 6, 2019, the Ateneo School of Government hosted the presentation of Dr. Andrew Chubb of Lancaster University. Dr. Chubb delivered his preliminary findings on the role of Chinese public opinion in the crisis diplomacy of the PRC government.
In his presentation to ASOG, Dr. Chubb shed light on the dynamics between Chinese public opinion and the response of the PRC government in averting diplomatic crises. To quantify the response of PRC government in diplomatic crises, he looks at the experiences of select Asian countries (including the Philippines) with China on the risk or the likelihood of a credible military aggression and economic retaliation. Moreover, the study also showed how neighboring countries interpret Chinese nationalist mobilizations and to what effect it has on in their respective civil societies.
Dr. Andrew Chubb’s presentation also featured an intimate look into China-Japan and China-South Korea bilateral relations. The two bilateral relations as cases precisely show the effect of Chinese nationalist movements on both the PRC government and on Japanese and Korean public opinion to the detriment of their respective bilateral relations.
