Ateneo is PRADA midgets chess champ; 5 players grab gold

Consisting of Ateneo de Manila chess varsity players Arjay Co (6-Berchmans), Marc Fua (6 Pignatelli), Elliot Peralta (6 Bellarmine), Thad Manuel (4 Humabon) and Chio Lainez (4 Dagohoy) from the Grade School and Pio Caro (Cardoner/7-Alfonso) from the Junior High School, the Ateneo Chess Team emerged as Midget Division champion in the recent Private Schools Athletic Development Association (PRADA) Chess Team Championship held on February 25, 2023, at La Salle Greenhills.
FIDE Arena Chess Master (ACM) Arjay Co led the Blue Eagles with his undefeated 3-0 feat, which paved the way for Ateneo's clean sweep of all rounds, besting the teams from Xavier School, International School Manila and La Salle Greenhills.
The Ateneans also received five individual gold medals for the following assigned boards: Caro, board 1; Co, board 2; Fua, board 3; Peralta, board 4; and Manuel, board 5. Meanwhile, Lainez bagged bronze for board 6.
