Archer Ckheil Enecio (12-Arnaiz) and taekwondo jin Stefanie Leones (11-Torres) of Ateneo de Manila Senior High School both won medals in last month’s Batang Pinoy national games.
Representing Makati, Ckheil won three golds (Olympic Round, 1440 Round, 60-m Qualifying Round) and two silvers (70-m Qualifying Round, 50-m Qualifying Round) in his category, Recurve U18 Male. His category had the most number of participants- 98 archers- making it a very competitive one. Among the 15-17 year-old archers from all over the country who competed, Ckheil received the most medals.
Stefanie represented Quezon City and won bronze for the sparring/kyorugi Blackbelt Welterweight division.
The taekwondo tournament was held at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City on December 21, while the archery events were held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila from December 18-22, 2023.
Organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Batang Pinoy (a.k.a. the Philippine Youth Games) is the national youth sports competition of the Philippines for athletes under 18 years old. It was created to determine the possible composition of the national pool of athletes that will compete internationally in tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics.
Batang Pinoy was held from December 17 to 22 across various sports venues in Metro Manila. It featured 25 sports, including kickboxing and breaking, which made their debuts. Close to 200 LGUs participated in Batang Pinoy 2023, with more than 15,000 young athletes competing for the 4811 medals at stake.
