Grade 5 chess wiz Thad Manuel is AAPS Unit Meet’s overall champ

Ateneo de Manila Grade School chess prodigies Thad Manuel (5-Dumagat) and Chio Lainez (5-Subanon) emerged as the overall champion and first runner-up, respectively, of the recent Athletic Association of Private Schools (AAPS) Chess Unit Meet’s elementary division. Thad scored six wins and one draw (score of 6.5) out of seven rounds, while, Chio scored six wins out of seven rounds (score of 6) in the same division.
The Unit Meet was held on January 13, 2024, at the School of St. Anthony in Lagro, Quezon City. Representatives from private schools in each of Quezon City’s six districts competed in the tournament, which was conducted over-the-board under a time control of 15 minutes plus 10 seconds delay.
As the top 2 winners of the AAPS Meet, Thad and Chio will represent Quezon City Private Schools in the District Meet Elimination Round to determine who will represent QC in the NCR Regional Meet en route to the 2024 Palarong Pambansa nationals.
Thad and Chio are both members of the AGS Chess Varsity and were coached for the AAPS Unit Meet by Joann Datu and Ildefonso Datu.
