AJFT is U18 champ of first ever Sta Lucia Football Cup

Composed of players from Ateneo de Manila Junior High School (AJHS) and Senior High School (ASHS), the Ateneo Junior  Football Team (AJFT) emerged as U18 Champion of the first ever Sta Lucia Cup, which was held in Pavia, Iloilo City, from 28 October to 3 November 2024.  The members of AJFT are Aidan Aguirre (12-Arnaiz), Enzo Altuna (11-Angelis), Diego Angeles (11-Borja), Zef Daquigan (12-Walpole), Andres Dumlao (11-Garnet), Ivan Gabasa (10-Page), Julio German (12-Oldcorne), Andres Hizon (11-Angelis), Manu Liamzon (12-Acquaviva), Karl Molina (12-Beyzym), Tim Patawaran (11-Bellarmino), Shawn Perea (12-Beyzym), Tiago Remulla (11-Campion), Gab Reyes (10-Pignatelli), Joaqs Reyes (12-Acquaviva), Ale Sias (9-Garnier), Manu Simpao (10-Spinola), Roman Tabayoyong (11-Escribano), Johnson Talosig (11-Borja), and Gino Templo (9-Grimaltos). They were coached by JP Merida, Gilbert Ayuson, Mark Maravilla, Jerwin Belina, and Paul Madrona.

In a thrilling final match that extended into five minutes of extra time, the Blue Eagles achieved a remarkable upset by defeating the heavily favored Janner Chiefy Football Club (JCFC) team, renowned for its strong ties to Barotac Nuevo. Often referred to as the "Football Capital of the Philippines,” Barotac Nuevo has a rich history of producing exceptional football talent. The JCFC team, drawing from this legacy, was widely expected to dominate the match. However, Ateneo's determination defied expectations, showcasing its members’ growth and potential in Philippine football. As the final whistle blew, the crowd erupted in jubilation, celebrating Ateneo’s resilience and strategic prowess on the field. 

The Sta Lucia Cup also attracted teams like Bayawan City FC, Iloilo Guimaras RFA, St. Alexius College, JCFC, and Kaya FC Academy.  

This victory not only sets a strong foundation as the AJFT prepares for the upcoming UAAP season - set to start on 18 January 2025 - but also signals the Blue Eagles’ readiness for the challenges ahead. With this unforgettable win, Ateneo solidifies its reputation and sets a powerful tone for the future.
