ASHS student Miki Pe Aguirre helps PH Women’s Ice Hockey Team win first IIHF Asia Cup championship

For the first time ever, the Philippine women’s ice hockey team clinched the championship title at the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s Asia Cup, held at the Al Hili Ice Rink in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 31 May to 6 June 2025.

We are proud to give a special shoutout to Ateneo de Manila Senior High School (ASHS) student Miki Pe Aguirre (11-Wright), one of the youngest members of this history-making champion team. Her contribution to the national squad’s success at such a young age is nothing short of remarkable.

Reflecting on the team’s inspiring achievement, Miki shared:

“Being a part of the Philippine Women’s Ice Hockey Team is an incredible honor. I’m proud to stand beside these strong, fearless women who inspire me every single day. As one of the youngest and newest members of the team, I’m humbled by the opportunity to learn from them and to grow — not just as an athlete, but as a person. Getting here wasn’t easy. My teammates and I have poured in countless hours of hard work — often at the oddest hours — made sacrifices, and pushed through both physical and mental barriers to earn our spot and fight for every win.

"Ice hockey is often seen as a male-dominated sport because of its intensity and physical contact, but we’re here to prove that women belong on the ice just as much as anyone else. Our recent victory at the IIHF Asia Cup is proof of that. Despite the challenges of pursuing a winter sport in a tropical country like the Philippines, we’ve shown that Filipinos are more than capable of competing on the international stage. Our journey is a testament to what resilience, discipline, confidence, and grit can achieve.

"As we prepare for the upcoming SEA Games and the World Championships, we carry the hope of breaking more barriers and stereotypes, growing the game for future generations, and showing young girls everywhere that there is power in being both tough and feminine — and that no dream is ever too bold when you’re willing to fight for it.”

This year’s Asia Cup featured fierce competition, with teams from Kyrgyzstan, India, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran all battling for supremacy. But it was the Filipinas who rose above the rest, dominating the tournament with an unblemished 5-0 record—driven by heart, grit, and an unyielding sense of Pinoy pride.
