Ateneo SHS PE faculty publish Scopus-indexed study on pickleball and racquet sport skill transfer
23 Jul 2025
A scholarly paper authored by Ateneo de Manila Senior High School Physical Education faculty members Jok Cobar (lead author) and Isay Reyes, titled “Kinematic Analysis of Pickleball Forehand Return and Skill Transfer of Accuracy from Badminton and Tennis Players,” was published in the Scopus-indexed Journal of Physical Education and Sport (JPES), Volume 25, Issue 6 – June 2025. Officially released on 30 June 2025, the paper was also co-authored by Ms. Angel Rodil, a faculty member of the Ateneo de Manila University School of Humanities.
This pioneering study investigates the kinematic performance of badminton and tennis athletes executing pickleball forehand returns, offering valuable insights into skill transfer across racquet sports. Its findings contribute to the scientific foundation necessary for developing evidence-based pickleball training programs in the Philippines.
Notably, the same paper received an Honorable Mention for Oral Presentation at the 13th International Conference on Sports and Exercise Science (ICSES), held from 19 to 21 June 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand, where it was presented by Cobar and Rodil.
This marks Mr. Cobar’s second Scopus-indexed publication in 2025. Earlier in June, he co-authored a paper with Eirenne Lumasang— formerly of the ASHS PE Subject Area and now with the ASHS Research Subject Area— titled “Perception of Physique Aesthetic, Fitness, and Anthropometric Scores of Filipino Body Samples,” published in Sport Mont, another Scopus-indexed international journal.
Publications in Scopus-indexed journals play a key role in enhancing Ateneo de Manila University's position in global academic rankings such as QS and Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. As one of the most reputable abstract and citation databases worldwide, Scopus supports the university's research productivity, international academic reputation, and faculty citation performance—underscoring its commitment to world-class, evidence-based education.
This recent achievement reflects the scholarly excellence of the ASHS Physical Education faculty, whose research continues to advance the field of sports science and foster innovation in education.
