15 Nov 2025
Promising Ateneo de Manila Grade School fencer Michael Garcia (3-Pinatubo) has earned multiple medals in two major fencing tournaments held in August and October this year. At the 3rd IUFC (International Union of Fencing Clubs) League – Manila Station on 9 August, Michael won Silver in the U8 Boys’ Sabre event. The tournament, organized as part of the IUGC developmental league, brought together young athletes from competitive fencing clubs and school-based teams across Metro Manila, giving participants an opportunity to gain ranking points and tournament experience.
Two months later, at the highly competitive PFA 3rd Minime and Veteran Ranking held from 11 to 12 October 2025 at the PhilSports Arena, PSC Complex in Pasig, Michael delivered an impressive performance, capturing Gold in the U8 Mixed Épée and Bronze in the U8 Mixed Sabre. The PFA Ranking series is known for drawing some of the most promising young fencers in the country, making his gold medal finish particularly noteworthy.
Winning gold in such a competitive field at his age highlights Michael’s exceptional skill, discipline, and potential as a young athlete. His ability to compete—and win—across multiple weapons demonstrates not only versatility but also a level of talent well beyond his years. Michael was guided by Ateneo Fencing Team coaches Edward Daliva and Rebekah Reyno for sabre, and Alexander Ragot for épée.
