Rising Filipino jiu‑jitsu standout Alonzo Fernandez of Ateneo Junior High School (AJHS) 9‑Gelabert continued his impressive competitive run in early 2026, earning medals at two prominent tournaments in the region.
ASEAN International Jiu‑Jitsu Championship
Alonzo kicked off his competitive season at the 2026 ASEAN International Jiu‑Jitsu Championship, held on 8 February at the Gateway 2 Mall’s Quantum Skyview Deck in Quezon City. This event, sanctioned under the Asian Sports Jiu‑Jitsu Federation (ASJJF) and part of the regional jiu‑jitsu circuit, brought together athletes from across Southeast Asia to compete in both Gi and No‑Gi formats across multiple weight divisions.
Competing with determination, Fernandez secured two Silver Medals, one in the Gi division and another in the No‑Gi category, where he faced competitors in the middleweight field even while entering as a featherweight. His performances reflected adaptability and tenacity against larger brackets.
Grappling Industries Manila
Fernandez followed up with a strong showing at Grappling Industries Manila on 14 March 2026 at Paco Arena in Manila. This popular Brazilian jiu-jitsu round‑robin format competition drew local and international grapplers and featured both Gi and No‑Gi brackets with rankings for individual athletes and teams.
Fernandez dominated the mats in the Gi division to claim a Gold Medal, while also earning a Silver Medal in the No‑Gi division, underscoring his well‑rounded skill set across disciplines.
Growing Jiu‑Jitsu Scene
These competitions are part of a burgeoning jiu‑jitsu community in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, where structured tournaments like ASJJF’s international opens and grassroots events such as Grappling Industries provide valuable competitive platforms for athletes of all ages and levels. They also contribute to strengthening the region’s presence on the wider jiu‑jitsu map.
With multiple podium finishes thus far in 2026, Fernandez remains a name to watch as the season progresses toward larger regional and international events later in the year.
