Together with the Filipino nation, the Ateneo de Manila University mourns the passing of National Artist for Literature Bienvenido L Lumbera on 28 September 2021.
Before he was declared a National Artist, Dr Lumbera was conferred the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi by the University in 2000,
For his landmark works in various genres in Philippine Literature, Theatre, and Popular Culture; for his consistent espousal of a nationalist critical perspective at a time when Western thinking dominated the literary/cultural scene; and for his lasting legacy as a consumate scholar/teacher who molded generations of scholars, critics and students of literature…
Bien was the husband of Cynthia “Shayne” N Lumbera, a long-time professor and former Chair of the Department of English of the Loyola Schools.
We request the Ateneo community to keep Bienvenido Lumbera and his family in your prayers.
†
Eternal rest grant unto Bien, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.
