RE:
Oscar M Lopez, 1930- 2023
Together with the Filipino nation, the Ateneo de Manila University mourns the passing of Oscar M Lopez on 22 April 2023.
The chairman emeritus of Lopez Holdings Corporation and the First Philippine Holdings Corporation, Lopez was an indefatigable advocate for sustainable operational excellence and social responsibility. He was responsible for the 'Lopez Credo,' which defined the overarching mission of the Lopez Group of Companies to serve God and the Filipino people.
He also served as director of ABS-CBN Corporation, chairman of the Lopez Group Foundation and Knowledge Channel Foundation, and chairman and president of the Eugenio Lopez Foundation.
Jesuit-educated (Ateneo de Manila, US-based Bellarmine Prep and the University of San Francisco), Lopez embodied the fullness of Ignatian values, constantly seeking ways to engage in nation-building and social transformation. He was instrumental in arranging the Lopez family donation of prime real estate for the Ateneo Professional Schools in Rockwell and the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health in Pasig City.
He once said, “Having benefited from the Ateneo education, especially the humanities orientation, the quality teaching, the concern for others, the Ignatian spirituality, and the deep-seated friendship with various Jesuit priests, it is but fitting and proper for the Lopez family to support the Ateneo and the Jesuits.”
Lopez was conferred an honorary doctorate in Humanities by the University in 2010.
We request the Ateneo community to keep Oscar M Lopez and his family in your prayers.
†
Eternal rest grant unto Oscar, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace. Amen.
