Election/Reelection of Trustees
I am pleased to announce that at the annual meeting of Ateneo de Manila University, Inc held last 4 November 2023, the Corporation (re)elected the following lay and Jesuit members of the Board of Trustees:
New Trustees elected for a 3-year term from November 2023 to November 2026:
Dr Fernando T Aldaba, BS Management Engineering (cum laude), 1980
Dr Fernando “Nandy” T Aldaba is a Professor of the Economics Department of Ateneo de Manila University where he has taught full-time since 1996. A seasoned administrator, Dr Aldaba held important positions in the University as Dean of the School of Social Sciences (2015- 2021), Chair of the Economics Department (2003-2009), Executive Director of the Ateneo Center for Social Policy and Public Affairs (1993- 2000), Executive Director of the Ateneo Center for Community Services (1988–1990). Outside Ateneo, Dr Aldaba actively engages in consultancy work for various government agencies and sits on several boards of national institutions, associations, and NGOs. To name a few, he served as Chairperson of the Technical Panel on the Social Sciences and Communication (2015-2021) and of the Technical Committee in Economics (2013-2014) of the Commission on Higher Education. He is also the current President of the Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Panlegal (Saligan).
Nandy holds a PhD in Economics (1996) and an MA in Economics (1985) from the University of the Philippines in Diliman.
Fr Antonio M Basilio SJ, BS Chemistry (cum laude), 1993
Fr Antonio “Tony” M Basilio SJ is an Associate Professor of Chemistry of Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) since 2015 where he concurrently serves as Rector of the Jesuit Community. From 2016 to 2018, Fr Basilio was the Assistant Dean for the Natural Science and Mathematics Cluster of the School of Arts and Sciences of ADDU. Prior to being missioned in Davao, he was Associate Director of the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service, Foundation, Inc (2014-2015), and taught with the Chemistry Department of Ateneo de Manila as Lecturer (2011-2013) and Assistant Instructor (1996-1999).
Fr Tony holds a PhD in Chemistry from National Taiwan University (2010), an MS in Chemistry from Ateneo de Manila University (1999), and an MA in Pastoral Ministry from Loyola School of Theology. His research interests, among others, include: valorization of agricultural wastes, green chemistry, environmental chemistry, and its interface with ethics and theology.
Fr Joseph Y Haw SJ
Fr Joseph “Jhaw” Y Haw SJ is the incoming President of Xavier School in San Juan and Nuvali. He served as President of Ateneo de Iloilo Santa Maria Catholic School (ADI-SMCS) for 7 years (2012-2019). As President of ADI SMCS, Fr Jhaw focused on improving school organizational planning, teacher training and formation, and Curriculum ICT integration. Fr Jhaw’s research interest focuses on the antecedents and consequences of teacher and student motivation.
Prior to his assignment in Iloilo, he worked as Prison Chaplain in New Bilibid Prison and headed the Society of Jesus’ Prison Ministry. He also taught in Xavier School San Juan from 2004 to 2006.
Fr Jhaw obtained his Doctor of Education degree from The Education University of Hong Kong (2022) and holds an MA in Theological Studies from the Loyola School of Theology. He earned his BS Computer Science degree from De La Salle University Manila.
The other Trustees who were re-elected for 3-year terms each are Ms Bernadine T Siy and Fr Mars P Tan SJ. On behalf of Ateneo de Manila, I thank Dr Aldaba, Fr Basilio, Fr Haw, Ms Siy, and Fr Tan for their generous willingness to provide strategic leadership and guidance to the University.
We thank as well Dr Fabian M Dayrit, Fr Karel S San Juan SJ, and Fr Gabriel Jose T Gonzalez SJ for their invaluable years of service to the University as Trustee. Each of them contributed substantially to the strategic decisions on our academic programs, development projects, mission and identity, and much more. We pray that God will continue to watch over them and bless all their endeavors.
