SEA-Europe Joint Funding Scheme (Upcoming)
In 2017 the Southeast Asia-Europe Joint Funding Scheme for Research and Innovation (JFS) was started to enhance research and innovation cooperation between the two regions. The JFS is a joint funding instrument under which national, regional and local funding agencies and ministries from SEA and Europe come together to fund bi-regional, multi-lateral research and innovation projects.
A first Joint Call for Proposals in the thematic areas of Health (Emerging Infectious Diseases/AMR) and Environment/Climate Change (Adaptation/Resilience of Food Production Systems, Impacts of Climate Change on Ecosystems/Biodiversity) was successfully implemented in 2017. In June 2018, the second joint call was launched, focusing on the thematic areas of Bioeconomy and Infectious Diseases. Since then, JFS entered its second phase and four additional calls have been launched in 2019 and 2020, two on Science & Technology (TRL<4) and two on Innovation (TRL>3). The focus on Health (Infectious Diseases and Digital Health) is still an integral part of the JFS, as well as on the Bioeconomy. The new calls further include Nanotechnologies and Smart Cities.
Beyond call-launching activities, JFS also organizes several events aiming at fostering scientific cooperation between Southeast Asian and European researchers, such as matchmaking events.
To foster cooperation opportunities, JFS is also working on a partnering tool and lab tour opportunities.

Supporting Critical Open-Source Technologies That Enable a Free and Open Internet
The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) announces an open competition for organizations interested in submitting applications for projects to strengthen the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms online through an open, interoperable, reliable, and secure global Internet, with a focus on technology development. Competitive proposals will develop and implement programs to develop, improve, implement, and sustain open-source technologies which serve as critical foundations for a free and open Internet.
In support of this goal, DRL is requesting program proposals to produce, support, innovate, implement, or advance the standardization of open-source internet technologies that provide software infrastructure and protocol functions for the sustainable protection and operation of an open, interoperable, reliable, and secure internet in ways that actively counter the progression of growing Internet restrictions by combatting repressive surveillance, censorship, and internet splintering. Objectives may include, but are not limited to:
- Developing, improving, or implementing internet communication protocols, software suites, or core Internet services, such as browsers or secure and resilient traffic routing and encryption, in ways that are necessary to and supportive of an open internet, with a focus on non-user-facing technologies. Improve upon or further develop, strengthen, or audit the censorship resistance and/or security properties of existing open-source internet communication technologies.
- Implement or advance technical standards or policies that govern internet communication technologies, which enable and/or protect censorship resistance and/or security properties of open-source Internet technology, including in contexts such as international standard-setting bodies, to better serve the needs of at-risk and marginalized communities.
- Provide or implement a sustainability plan, addressing issues such as ongoing maintenance of existing rights-enabling open-source technologies or protocols.

Awards and contests
World Justice Challenge
The World Justice Challenge is a global competition and program of supporting activities to identify, recognize and promote good practices and high-impact initiatives that protect and advance the rule of law.
The Challenge compiles an evidence base for successful rule of law approaches, raises their strategic visibility, and strengthens an emerging network of rule of law champions. The Challenge competition invites submissions for initiatives that address critical rule of law challenges around the world in particular thematic categories. For the 2024 competition, the theme is The Rule of Law Foundation of Democracy, focusing on effective strategies for strengthening the rule of law to reverse autocracy and rebuild trust in democratic governance. Past themes have been access to justice, anti-corruption and open government, accountable governance, and equal rights and non-discrimination.
The competition has had two in-person cycles in the context of the World Justice Forum (in 2019 and 2022), and one virtual cycle (in 2021). Project topics are diverse and multi-disciplinary, and have included combating gender-based violence, monitoring government spending, promoting environmental protections, safeguarding the right to information, and supporting youth leadership.
In each cycle, the Challenge selects and convenes a group of finalists from across sectors, including civil society organizations, government agencies, media, and the private sector. A judging panel awards cash prizes to winning projects that show results and promising potential for future progress, replication, and scaling. The competition also supports all finalist organizations with visibility, collaboration, and profile-building. Finalists are invited to join the World Justice Challenge Alumni Network, a community of practice that facilitates year-round networking and information exchange for its members.
