The Office of the Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation is happy to announce this week's information on eight external grants and one conference that we have received and gathered. External Research Grants Opportunities, Conferences, and Fellowships for Ateneo Faculty and graduate students are now being updated

Research/Project Grants

European Outdoor Conservation Association Grants 
EOCA funds projects which benefit biodiversity in a wild landscape. Our definition of ‘landscape’ includes marine environments, and a broad range of wild, non-urban spaces. Projects must conserve, protect, enhance, restore, and/or reconnect habitats within a given landscape that are particularly important for the biodiversity there.

The biodiversity focus should also address the importance that EOCA places on the issue of climate change. Projects should ensure that the habitats being conserved are those that sequester carbon, reduce emissions, enable adaptations to climate change, and/or protect against further habitat and biodiversity loss.

It is also very important that the projects are beneficial to the local communities that live in, or near, these habitats. Projects should highlight how they encourage local stewardship of habitats, alleviate poverty, support local ecosystem services, while at the same time, having a link to outdoor enthusiasts who value these precious wild spaces.

The Spencer Foundation Large Research Grants on Education Program
 
The Large Research Grants on Education Program supports education research projects that will contribute to the improvement of education, broadly conceived, with budgets ranging from $125,000 up through $500,000 for projects ranging from one to five years. We accept applications twice a year.

This program is “field-initiated,” meaning that proposal submissions are not in response to a specific request for a particular research topic, discipline, design, or method. Our goal for this program is to support rigorous, intellectually ambitious and technically sound research that is relevant to the most pressing questions and compelling opportunities in education. We seek to support scholarship that develops new foundational knowledge that may have a lasting impact on educational discourse.

IDFA Bertha Fund
 
The IDFA Bertha Fund is delighted to support fifteen projects as part of the IBF Classic funding scheme, awarding a total of €276,500 to help realize their documentary projects.

The new selection includes five projects in the development and ten projects in the production and post-production categories, selected from 360 eligible applications.

Operating since 1998, IBF Classic is among the leading grant programs for documentary filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania. The grant offers support to documentary projects in all stages, from starting up and developing a project to the final phases of post-production. In addition to the grant, the selected project teams will receive tailor-made support from IDFA’s Filmmaker Support department.

Crazy 8 Initiative Program on Childhood Cancer Predisposition

In 2024, ALSF Crazy 8 Initiative will focus on Childhood Cancer Predisposition and Prevention. It is now estimated that at least 15-20% of children with cancer harbor a germline cancer predisposition gene. Although currently about 100 cancer predisposition syndromes are known, there are clearly more syndromes and more genes to be discovered. There is a need to identify cancers in these individuals early to establish surveillance protocols for effective treatment. 

In addition, there is a need to develop effective approaches to prevent or delay tumor onset in children determined to be genetically at risk. The focus of this award will be on multiple aspects of a single cancer predisposition syndrome, or on a broader area (e.g. surveillance) across a number of different syndromes. Five major areas of focus have been identified for this Crazy 8 RFA: 

  • New Gene Discovery 
  • Genotype-phenotype 
  • correlations  
  • Surveillance optimization 
  • Predisposition Models 
  • Cancer Prevention   

Program Description This ALSF Crazy 8 RFA focuses on understanding childhood cancer predisposition and prevention.  The focus must be on pediatric/adolescent cancer predisposition and should be a consortium of two or more institutions with different areas of research collaborating to integrate their expertise. It is strongly encouraged to have a patient advocate on the team. The proposal should address a topic that is responsive to at least one of the five areas of focus listed above.

Remarkable Launcher Pre-Accelerator Program(Remote/Virtual)
Remarkable Launcher Pre-Accelerator Program (Launcher) supports entrepreneurs and innovators from the beginning of their startup journey. Co-designed with people with disability, entrepreneurs and researchers, we support early-stage startups making a difference in the lives of people with disability.

Leveraging our experience in accelerating impactful startups since 2016, this 8-week part-time program is for those new to the startup ecosystem or that want to innovate in disability, ageing or health tech. 
 
Who Are We Looking For?
Individuals or teams who are entrepreneurs, researchers, people with lived experience, carers and other subject matter experts.
  1. In the disability, ageing or health tech spaces.
  2. Anywhere from idea, to prototype, to early revenue stage.
  3. Wanting support from experienced startup facilitators, mentors and founders.

Fellowships

The Global Heumann Fellowship (Remote/Virtual)

WID’s Global Heumann Fellowship Program will honor and grow Judy’s legacy by supporting disability leaders and advocates around the world to work on projects that promote disability rights and disability justice in their regional communities, as a bridge to an equitable, inclusive, and just world. Fellows will be charged with conducting research, writing a white paper, building relationships, supporting opportunities for collaboration, and program development to drive WID’s mission and strategic focus areas including: accessibility and universal design; emergency preparedness, disaster risk reduction, and climate resilience; global community inclusion, regional/global policy, and the overall power of activism.

Through this twelve-month fellowship term, each fellow is engaged in a unique combination of opportunities for thought leadership on national and global policy, research strategies, advocacy, program development, and contributions to initiatives aimed at advancing the rights of persons with disabilities globally. Fellows will focus on identifying and leading research with the support of WID, as it regards the fellow’s respective region, expertise, and collaboration with WID.

Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) fellowship programme
 
Applications are now open for the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) fellowship programme for social-change leaders who are working to tackle inequality. Policymakers, researchers, activists, practitioners, artists, and movement-builders from around the world are invited to apply to the innovative, fully-funded, and inequalities-focused fellowship programme based at the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Currently recruiting for its eighth cohort, the AFSEE Fellowship is aimed at mid-career social-change leaders from across the globe, who have at least seven years of experience in challenging inequalities. Applications are accepted from individuals working on any field of social and economic equity, including, but not limited to economic and social rights; sustainability and environmental activism; tax justice and economic alternatives; women’s, minority, and disability rights; rights to education; democracy and governance; housing and urban inequalities; labour rights; community organising; arts and culture; and peacebuilding and transitional justice.
