Memo to                  :

The University Community

Subject                     :

Dr Sixto K Roxas III (6 August 1927- 24 July 2024)

We extend our condolences to the family of Dr Sixto ‘Ting’ K Roxas, who passed away on 24 July 2024.

Dr Sixto K Roxas III

Dr Roxas (GS’40, HS’46, AB’50, Honoris Causa PhD HL’75) embodied his Ateneo education and Ignatian values, using his gifts and talents to make a difference in the lives of others. Graduating Summa cum Laude, Dr Roxas was one of the first economists to enter government service in the mid-1950s. With his business and finance acumen, his accomplishments were myriad: chief economic planner of the government, first Filipino president of the Asian Institute of Management, economist at the Central Bank of the Philippines and the Philippine National Bank, Executive Vice President of Filoil Refinery Corporation, Vice Chairman of the American Express Bank in New York, Chairman of Amex Bank in London, and CEO of the Bancom Group in the Philippines and Asia, which pioneered the development of money market in the Philippines. He also served in some of the biggest not-for-profit organizations in the country, such as the Philippine Business for Social Progress, Green Forum, Foundation for the Philippine Environment, Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement, and the Maximo T Kalaw Institute for Sustainable Development. In 1960, Dr Roxas received the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) for economics. In 1975, Ateneo de Manila bestowed on him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Despite his strong commitment to various endeavors, Dr Roxas made time to share his knowledge and wisdom with the younger generation. From 1991 to 1994, he was a part-time lecturer at the Department of Economics at Ateneo de Manila. He likewise served as a lecturer at the University of the Philippines and Fordham University in New York, where he took his graduate studies. Dr Roxas taught ecological social science at Miriam College and the Asian Social Institute.
