Fr Eric G Velandria SJ (4 April 1959 – 6 September 2025) (Memo U2526-031)

It is with sadness that we inform the University community of the sudden passing of Fr Eric G Velandria SJ. Fr Eric returned to our Creator in the morning of 6 September 2025 in Grosseto, Italy.

Fr Eric entered the Society in 1985 and was ordained a priest in 1996.

He served as a trustee of the University from 2016 to 2019 and was reelected for a second term, which he was unable to complete after being appointed Coordinator for Global Education at the Jesuit Refugee Service in Rome in 2020. Fr Eric was Chair of the Basic Education Committee of the Board (2014-2020). He also served as the High School Principal of Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu from 2004 to 2007. Likewise, he was appointed the High School Principal of Ateneo de Naga University from 1998 to 2001. Fr Eric was regent in Naga from 1990 to 1992.

He will be waked at the Borgia Chapel in the Jesuit Curia in Rome on Tuesday, 9 September. The interment will be at Campo Verano, right after the Funeral Mass at the Church of Santo Spirito on Wednesday, 10 September.

Locally, a Memorial Mass for Fr Eric will be celebrated on Tuesday, 9 September, 8:00pm at the Oratory of St Ignatius in Loyola House of Studies.
