Pathways Joins Artificial Intelligence Workshop
12 Jul 2022 | Pathways to Higher Education
We just had our first on-site event in the last two years! After a week of workshops about artificial intelligence (A.I) with students from Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong Poly U), eight of our Pathways participants put their skills to the test in a friendly competition among their two learning groups last Saturday, July 9, 2022.
Organized with and hosted by the Ateneo Office of Social Concern and Involvement, the participants joined the "Make My Eyes: World Youth A.I. Object Recognition Programming Workshop & Competition." The competition is the culmination of their week-long workshop where they learned about how A.I. can be used to aid the blind or those with visual impairments. The workshop ran from July 4 to 8 with synchronous online sessions. The two groups created and trained an A.I. program to identify items such as cup noodle flavors, lollipop flavors, and emojis.
Beyond learning about how artificial intelligence can help people with disabilities, we are sure that our participants have also found new ways to apply what they learned to innovate solutions for other problems as well. Similarly, we hope our Hong Kong Poly U friends found this short exchange of culture and lessons meaningful!
