Erika Kimberly King is SOSS Pedagogical Innovation Awardee for 2022

It is with great pleasure that the Office of the Dean, School of Social Sciences, and the SOSS Coordinator for Teaching and Learning 

announce the awarding of the SOSS Pedagogical Innovation Award to: 

for the pedagogical innovation entitled “All Aboard:  Using the Gather.town Metaverse and Themed Modules to Teach Psychological Statistics” implemented in PSY90.01 and PSY90.02:  Psychological Statistics, Lecture and Laboratory, respectively.    

The innovation “…sought to reframe students’ perspectives by designing the course as a railroad adventure traversing different lands and themed “stops”, referencing real-world destinations and popular media to illustrate the theory and practical use of Statistics. Using pop-culture-themed modules and Gather metaverse provided students the context in which everyone, regardless of their confidence in understanding statistical concepts, could meet on common ground… Because lecture and laboratory (research project) modules alternated between “train stops”, students were given the time and opportunity to reflect on and evaluate their themed learning experiences and be moved to action in how they might apply what they’ve learned to their own ongoing research projects.”  

Ms. King is awarded a three-unit deload to allow her to write an article on the innovation for submission and publication in an academic journal.  In addition, she will share this innovation to the SOSS faculty through a talk that will be scheduled in due time.
